We’re delighted to be awarded the Silver Food for Life Catering Mark by the Soil Association. We are just one of six nursery groups to be awarded silver and is a result of our dedication to providing quality childcare and healthy eating for children.
The silver award is assessed on a points system whereby the group was assessed on our menus and ingredients we use. Based on ethical and environmentally friendly food alongside locally sourced ingredients and healthy menus – Toad Hall was given the accolade of silver which we are immensely proud of.
David Kay from the Soil Association commented“we set a standard that 75% of food on the menu has to be freshly prepared each day – Toad Hall go beyond this
with 92% of their full weekly menu being freshly prepared; the team should be proud of their achievement”.
Over the last few years we have made a conscious effort to increase healthy eating for children in our care and now only use:
- Red Tractor Farm Assured meats – this ensures that all food has been farmed, processed and packed within the UK
- RSPCA Assured (was Freedom Food) meats
- Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified sustainable seafood
- Organic milk
- Free range eggs
We continue to review the food we provide to ensure healthy eating for children by working closely with our food suppliers as well as liaising with our chefs to offer healthy menus. Our menus are frequently updated to keep our children interested and ensure they continue to enjoy the food we provide – they are also checked and approved by the Children’s Food Trust. For some of our full time children the majority of their food is supplied by us so it is immensely important that we give them the very best we can and set them up properly for a life of healthy eating.
Not only do we strive to be one of the best at healthy eating, we also provide a number of other programmes such as our Let’s Get Physical and Cook and Grow programme. Both are aimed at teaching children about food, how it’s produced and how physical exercise is an important aspect of daily life. Our staff are constantly thinking up new ideas and we’re currently celebrating Healthy Eating Week, as well as preparing for our Summer Allotment Challenge where all staff and children are taking part!
