The Government has just announced it is scrapping the Level 3 requirement of having to hold GCSEs above grade C in Maths and English for Early Years Educators. This is great news for childcare staff who are wanting to move up to Level 3 within day nurseries and is applauded by employers as it should result in more people choosing a career in childcare in the first place.
Like other day nursery and childcare facilities Toad Hall has found staff recruitment a challenge, since the Government originally announced the requirement for GCSE English and Maths, and is delighted that the Government has reverted to requiring staff to have functional skills rather than the formal GCSE qualifications.
Early years minister Caroline Dinenage announced the change in strategy due to pressure from the early years sector which has faced a crisis in recruitment since the 2014 requirements came in to force for Level 3 Early Years Educator (EYE) staff to hold GCSE Maths and English.
A Government consultation of over 4,000 people reported that only 4 per cent of people believed the GCSE requirements had improved quality, yet 77% had experienced difficulty with staff recruitment in the last two years, with the main reason given, being the GCSE qualifications requirement.
The new system comes into effect in April 2017 and it means that nursery staff qualifying at Level 3 EYE will be allowed to count in staff to child ratios with any suitable Level 2 English and maths qualifications, including functional skills as well as GCSEs. So, a great result for the childcare industry and we are delighted that many of Toad Hall’s existing childcare staff can now work towards gaining their EYE Level 3 accreditation.
