Choosing the right nursery for your little bundle of joy is a big decision. With thousands of day nurseries to choose from and so many different options available, it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve come up with useful top tips on what to look for when choosing a nursery:
Is the nursery homely and welcoming?
When choosing a nursery, book a visit and check out how welcoming the nursery setting feels. Are the staff friendly and welcoming and do the children seem happy and content? A good nursery should be a home from home where children can build confidence and thrive.
Toad Hall are proud to provide a caring nursery environment as well as a stimulating one, because if children are happy and settled, they will be healthy and active learners. Everything is provided at our nurseries, including food, nappies and sun cream, making it easier for parents.
Are there plenty of fun and educational activities?
A big part of choosing a nursery is checking out what activities are on offer. Nurseries should offer plenty of different activities designed to help your child develop skills and confidence to prepare them for school. All nurseries must follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, but at Toad Hall our educational approach goes above and beyond to give each child superb learning opportunities and help them to reach their full potential.
Our children learn through play with innovative programmes such as Magical Maths and Cook and Grow. We enjoy lots of physical fun outdoors and our children love expressing themselves through games and song with our Early Language Programme. These activities build confidence and make Toad Hall the perfect setting to get children ready for the transition to school.
What’s on the menu?
A good nursery should prioritise healthy eating and encourage children to try a variety of foods. Menus should be nutritionally balanced to help your child develop and grow. At Toad Hall, healthy eating in our nurseries is a major priority. We are the first group of nurseries to be given the Children’s Food Trust seal of approval and our menus and recipes are all nutritionally analysed to meet the “Eat Better, Start Better” guidelines. Our children sit around tables together to eat, and learn to enjoy a wide range of fresh foods in a sociable setting.
Is the nursery environment safe?
An essential question to ask is about safety. Look at the procedures in place for safeguarding and ask about first aid training. Toad Hall has been awarded a platinum level award – the highest possible accreditation – in recognition that at least 90% of our staff hold paediatric first aid certificates. All Toad Hall nursery staff are DBS checked with the police prior to starting work. We are absolutely committed to health and safety across our nurseries with regular audits by our own strategic adviser for health and safety.
What do other parents say?
Checking out parent reviews is invaluable when choosing a day nursery. It gives you a great insight into what parents think and will help you to make the right decision for your child. Toad Hall actively encourages prospective parents to read our reviews and find out more about life at nursery. For more information on Toad Hall, read about our childcare approach here.
