At Toad Hall, health and safety at nursery is of the utmost importance to us and at the heart of our policies and procedures. Our staff are all DBS checked by the police prior to starting work and they are strongly committed to ensuring that we provide safe, secure and appealing environments for children to enjoy and develop in. To achieve this, it is absolutely vital for us to minimise accidents wherever possible, ensuring our staff are well trained in the event of an incident happening and naturally, acting to prevent the spread of germs.
The most common accident among toddlers and young children is tripping or falling. Whilst this, to a degree, is to be expected with children’s balance and co-ordination taking time to develop through movement and exercise, it’s important that we take steps at Toad Hall to minimise the risk of tripping and eliminate any factors that could contribute to tumbles. Encouraging safe play also plays a key part in avoiding accidents with our nursery staff offering reminders during activities of how to stay safe whilst having fun and building confidence through play.
Routine safety checks are regularly undertaken at our nurseries to ensure children are not exposed to any danger, and we are mindful of tidying away any potential obstacles. Our watchful nursery staff take supervision very seriously and carefully observe little ones at play to ensure they don’t get too close to any environmental factors that could result in a trip or fall. Each of our nurseries has a health and safety manual which is available for parents to view outlining all our procedures and policies.
High Hygiene Standards
Maintaining excellent hygiene standards is central to our daily operations at Toad Hall sites. Young children are not only very tactile with their surroundings, but also have immune systems that are still developing as they experience the world around them. We make children aware of germs and ensure regular and thorough handwashing to prevent germs from being spread. All areas of our nurseries are cleaned frequently to a very high standard to help us maintain a clean and safe environment for the children to learn and play together.
Toad Hall is part of a Primary Authority Partnership scheme which means that we are able to receive guidance from North Herts Council across all of our locations. As well as advising on our food safety procedures, they also provide us with consistency in auditing and advise on our health and safety policies.
A fantastic demonstration of our commitment to health and safety at nursery is our support of a new toothbrushing initiative which was introduced at all of our nurseries this year. Children learn the importance of oral hygiene and each child has been provided with their own toothbrush. Children brush their teeth together as a group and we talk about why it’s important to make sure teeth are regularly cleaned.
Frequent checks and assessment
Health and safety at nursery is always at the forefront of Toad Hall operations with regular audits of our buildings, toys and equipment undertaken by experts who are specially trained. Independent experts also check our water systems, gas supplies and electrical equipment annually, to make sure that all of our nurseries are reaching the highest standards.
Training our team
At Toad Hall we will always take every precaution necessary to prevent an accident or injury. In the event of an incident, parents have peace of mind knowing that our team is well trained to provide the best care possible. We are proud that every member of our staff is Paediatric First Aid trained. We were awarded a Platinum award, the highest level of award possible, by Tiger Lily, our Paediatric First Aid training provider, for having 100% of staff Paediatric First Aid trained, unusual in other nursery settings.
Our commitment to health and safety at nursery means that we continue to evaluate our procedures, making continuous improvements where possible. Our staff are given toolbox talks at regular intervals, which helps them understand and explore how our policies can be applied practically in their daily roles. It is with this focus on nursery hygiene, accident avoidance, auditing of policies and environment, combined with staff training, which ensures Toad Hall is a safe place for children, staff and parents.
