Men in early years is an ongoing hot topic and an area Toad Hall has embraced. With already 5 men employed across our 13 nurseries we are proud to launch a ‘Men in Early Years’ event with fellow professionals.
On Friday 24 April 2015, Sophie Haylock (HR Advisor for Toad Hall Nursery Group) organised a two-hour networking brunch with 15 other industry professionals to explore many of the questions and challenges faced by men in childcare. The session included representatives from The Co-Operative Childcare, Hawk Training, Surrey County Council Early Years Team, a Surrey-based Childminder and a Surrey Outreach Professional, along with 4 of Toad Hall’s male practitioners.
Along with the other providers, Toad Hall is committed to increasing recruitment and retention of men in the childcare sector. The event was set up to bring various professionals together to create a joined-up approach and avoid unnecessary duplicating efforts.
Over the coming months, the group will be working together to create a supportive network for those professionals interested in ‘Men in Early Years’ as well as tackling the wider issues of recruiting and retaining more men into the industry.
Speaking to Toad Hall after the event, Daniel Arnell (Toad Hall, Horley) said: “I was Interested to hear other views from men working in childcare because I have only ever worked with women! I am keen to help promote men working in childcare and break down the stereotype that it’s a woman’s job. Everyone brings something different whether you’re male or female; it’s good to have that balance in a setting. I like the idea of networking in a small group and then work towards making it a bigger initiative”
The next event will be meeting at Barrow Hills for some Forest School activities and social media campaigning on 3rd July 2015.
