Toad Hall Nursery Group is committed to creating a sustainable future by integrating environmental responsibility into its nurseries. Our vision is to become a leader in sustainable childcare, fostering environmentally conscious behaviours among children, staff, and families while reducing our overall carbon footprint.
Our Key Goals
- Reduce waste and increase recycling
- Lower energy and water consumption
- Use more sustainable resources
- Promote nature-based learning
- Engage staff, parents, and the wider community
Sustainability in the Curriculum
At our nurseries, we’re committed to nurturing a love for the environment from an early age. Our eco-activities are woven into everyday learning, helping children understand the importance of caring for the planet. From outdoor learning sessions and growing their own fruits and vegetables, to regular litter picks and hands-on recycling lessons, these activities help instil lifelong eco-conscious values.
We have ‘Eco Champs’ in all settings, encouraging children to learn about conservation, biodiversity, and climate change. We also work closely with parents to extend these eco-friendly habits beyond the nursery, creating a strong community dedicated to sustainability.

Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking meaningful steps every day to reduce our environmental impact and teach children the value of sustainability.
Waste Reduction & Recycling
We actively reduce waste through recycling practices; from sorting paper, plastic, and food waste to reusing materials in creative activities. To reduce food waste, we have implemented efficient meal planning and composting initiatives, sharing compost with families and the local community. We’re striving to achieve zero waste to landfill across all our nurseries.
Energy & Resource Saving
We focus on using energy and resources efficiently. We maximise natural light, switch off lights and equipment when not in use, and are upgrading to energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems across all settings. We have also introduced water-saving measures, including rainwater collection and sensor taps where feasible.
Sustainable Resources & Materials
We use sustainable resources wherever possible - from using eco-friendly cleaning products and upcycled natural materials for arts and crafts, to choosing ethical, sustainable suppliers for toys, furniture, and more to support responsible production.
Outdoor Learning & Green Spaces
Our outdoor spaces are expanding with natural materials, and we’ve introduced vegetable and herb gardens for children to grow their own food. Regular nature walks, bug hunts, and forest school sessions inspire a love for wildlife and the natural world.
Food and Nutrition
We source ingredients from reputable, eco-conscious suppliers, choosing local and sustainable options whenever possible. We reduce food waste through portion control, composting, and a zero-waste approach, while also introducing more plant-based meals to support both health and the environment.
Community and Parental Involvement
We strive to involve our community and parents in our eco efforts by hosting workshops for staff and families, organising clean-up events and tree-planting days. We have plans to form an “Eco-Committee” made up of staff, parents, and children to lead and support sustainable initiatives together.
